Monstera Deliciosa (Monstera deliciosa)

Monstera Deliciosa

A climbing aroid from the forests of southern Mexico, grown for its large, split leaves. On a covered balcony it puts out a new leaf every few weeks through the monsoon and slows down in winter. It copes with a dimmer spot than most big-leaved plants. Keep it out of afternoon sun, which scorches the leaves in a day.

Why this plant

It earns its corner.

A Monstera Deliciosa is not decoration.

Fills a corner fast

Adds several large leaves a year in warm, humid weather. One plant is enough to anchor a bare corner.

Handles low light

Keeps going in a dimmer room or a deep covered balcony. Growth slows and new leaves come smaller, with fewer splits.

Likes the monsoon

Grows fastest in humid months. In dry Delhi winters, group it with other plants to hold moisture around the leaves.

I had killed every plant I ever owned. Eleven months in, I have lost none.

We eat dinner on the balcony now. It used to hold a washing machine.

One team, one day. I left for work and came back to a different room.

The lighting is what sold me. It looks like a hotel after dark.
