Areca Palm (Dypsis lutescens)

Areca Palm

Commonly called the Butterfly Palm, the areca is native to Madagascar and grows as a clump of slim, cane-like stems with arching, feathery fronds. Set along a railing, it screens a balcony edge from the neighbours within a season or two. It likes bright indirect light, steady moisture and humid air. It is safe around cats and dogs.

Lovely screen against the neighbour. Drops a few lower fronds in winter, which the care guide had warned me about.

Divya NJubilee Hills, Hyderabad

Bought it because the cat kept chewing the last palm. This one is safe, and she leaves it alone anyway.

Farhan QBandra, Mumbai

Two years in and it has doubled. Survived a Bengaluru summer on a west balcony with an evening water and nothing else.

Anita RKoramangala, Bengaluru

I had killed every plant I ever owned. Eleven months in, I have lost none.

Ananya R.Koramangala

We eat dinner on the balcony now. It used to hold a washing machine.
